Frequently Asked Questions
Who was Sam Sweeney?
Sam was a devoted husband, father, and the kind of friend who showed up for you no matter what. He was a tennis professional who dedicated his life to the Crystal Lake tennis community. He coached varsity tennis at Prairie Ridge and Crystal Lake Central, taught at the Crystal Lake Park District and local clubs, and earned ATP doubles ranking points. He was inducted into the North Central College Hall of Fame. But what people remember most is his infectious sense of humor and his instinct to put others before himself. This tournament honors his memory and benefits the Sweeney Foundation. You can learn more on our About page.
What is a “Bracket Open”?
The name is a nod to Sam. He loved brackets. If there was a competition, be it in sports or video games, he wanted to make a bracket. We think he would get a laugh from the name.
Is that a mason jar in the logo?
It's a pickle jar actually. Sam was notorious for drinking pickle juice to help with cramping. Each participant will be given pickle juice at the start of the tournament.
Do I need to be a good tennis player?
Not at all! This tournament welcomes players of all skill levels. The round-robin format means every team plays multiple matches regardless of results. The focus is on having fun, honoring Sam, and supporting the Sweeney Foundation's mission.
How much is the entry fee?
The entry fee is $75 per player ($150 per team). Net proceeds support the Sweeney Foundation (501(c)(3) status pending), supporting local families through sudden hardship, growing youth tennis, and funding scholarships. The event also includes free drop-in tennis lessons for kids!
Can I come watch or donate without playing?
Absolutely! Spectators are welcome and there is no charge to attend. If you'd like to contribute without playing, you can make a donation through our Donate page.
Where does the money go?
Net proceeds support the Sweeney Foundation (501(c)(3) status pending), with three purposes: helping local families through sudden hardship, growing youth tennis in our community, and funding scholarships and financial assistance.
Is my donation tax-deductible?
No. Donations and entry fees are not tax-deductible. The Sweeney Foundation's 501(c)(3) application has been submitted and its status is pending IRS determination. Until the IRS issues a determination letter, no contribution to the Foundation should be treated as a tax-deductible charitable contribution. Entry fees are also never tax-deductible under IRS rules because participants receive goods and services in return (court time, event participation, lunch, etc.). Please consult your tax advisor about your specific situation.
Why a foundation instead of a direct fundraiser?
Sam touched so many lives in our community that we wanted his memory to live on through ongoing impact - supporting families in crisis, helping young players grow through tennis, and funding scholarships year after year. The Foundation lets us honor Sam every year, not just once.
How are teams formed?
First preference goes to pairs applying together. If there is availability, single-person applicants will be matched up on a first come, first served basis.
